When you look into lighting alternatives for your [city] business, you immediately wonder what the ROI will be.

Today we are going to take a look at how much interest you will make on the investment of LED lighting for your [city] business strictly in terms of energy costs.

To keep things simple, let’s use a small business for our example and say that you have approximately 10 incandescent light bulbs you need to replace with LEDs. The most commonly used incandescent bulbs use 60 watts. To figure out yearly cost, you need to know how many kilowatts are used. Let’s say you run your lights for eight hours a day. Your equation would look like this:

8 x 365 x 60 = 175,200 (175.2 kilowatts)

Eight is the number of hours the lighting is run, 365 is for the total number of days in a year, and 60 is the wattage of the bulb. You can use this same equation to figure out the lighting costs for your own company.

At an average price of about 12 cents per kilowatt, each incandescent light bulb is going to cost you just over $21 each year. If you have ten light bulbs currently being used, this amounts to $210 per year. If you are trying to figure out your total company’s lighting costs, just figure out how many light bulbs are currently in use. Your equation could then look like this:

175.2 x .12 = 21.024
21.024 x 10 = $210.24

Now, let’s say you have replaced your incandescent bulbs with LED lamps. To achieve the same amount of lighting as a 60 watt incandescent bulb, you would only need an 8 watt LED lamp. You’re still running your lamps for eight hours a day, so your equation now looks like this:

8 x 365 x 8 = 23,360 (23.36 kilowatts)

This equates to about $2.80 spent on lighting per bulb, per year. With ten lamps in use, this equals $28 per year spent on lighting. To find out how much money is saved, you would subtract this new number from the original one. In this case you come up with a savings of $182 each year.

The bigger your business is, the higher your savings will end up being. Large [city] companies with multiple locations can potentially save thousands of dollars on lighting each year. This extra money could simply mean an extra profit margin, or it could become an investment in some worthy causes. Take some of the money you save and add it to your marketing budget and this could bring you more sales, which would make your overall benefit even greater.

If you still aren’t sure about how much LED lighting could save your company in energy costs, let us do the math. Math is a universal language and it doesn’t lie.

Once you make the switch, your only real question will be why you didn’t do it sooner.
